  • Q. What country were you staying in?
    • India
  • Q. Where were you doing research?
  • Q. How long were you there?
    • 2 months
  • Q. What sort of research were you doing?
    • Plotting the fluctuation of the signal strength of a set of pulsars over time
  • Q. Did being abroad influence the kind of research you’re doing?
    • No
  • Q. What’s the coolest thing about being abroad?
    • India is home for me, the coolest thing was getting to spend time with my family over summer while doing a really cool project.
  • Q. What’s your favorite new phrase from the language?
    • The only new phrase I learned was an english one, “buff”, referring to buffalo meat.
  • Q. What’s the hardest thing about being abroad?
    • Definitely isolation
  • Q. What did you do in your free time?
    • I went for two hiking trips. It rained so hard the second time that I pretty much slid on my butt most of the way down the mountain; rode back to town on the train wet and muddy. I also tried to explore the city, with friends I made at the institution and by myself. Apart from that, I played the guitar and went to the gym.
  • Q. What’s the coolest thing you’ve done or seen while abroad?
    • I got an aerial view of GMRT array from the peak of the Narayangad hill, which was an amazing eyeopener into how far the dishes spanned.
  • Q. What advice would you offer others thinking of going abroad?
    • Be sure you are invested in your project, and be prepared for ups and downs.
  • Q. What skills have you learned abroad?
    • I did learn how to hang-dry my clothes for the first time, but the monsoon rains made this a nearly impossible task.
  • Q. Is there anything you’d do differently or anything you wish you’d have known?
    • I wish I had been better prepared for the isolation, 2 months is longer than it sounds. But while 2 months seemed like a scary prospect at the very beginning, I was fine once I got into the swing of things.
